What is Wide Format?
Wide-format printing, also known as large-format, is a term in the print industry to refer to print jobs that require devices that can handle sheets wider than traditional presses can handle – typically 24 inches or wider. Most wide format projects are done on our flatbed printer that boards 8 feet by 4 feet of material. Even more impressive is our AGFA Jeti Titan flatbed which can execute custom products up to 122 inches by 79 inches in surface area. We also have a banner roll-to-roll in house that can print up to 10 feet wide and of indefinite lengths, by stitching multiple pieces together we can beautifully craft custom size jobs.
Image size, blow-ups, and quality specs
What is the ideal image size and resolution for for a project?
The answer to that question depends on the “ideal viewing range” of your print job. Prints that people will viewing up close like yard signs and car wraps need to be optimal 300 dpi. At the other end of the spectrum, billboards and large signage do not need to be of as high resolution to view since they will be seen from afar.
We prefer vector art since it has has lossless properties meaning we can scale it to any size without losing any of the data or detail. There are cases though where a vector cannot be used – like when you want to use a photograph in your design. We use state-of-the-art fractal technology when needed to scale artwork and avoid as much pixelation as possible. Of course it is best to work with original photos without blowing up pixel ratios. The common resolution quality for close-up work is 300 dpi, and can be as low as 150 dpi for giant graphics like billboards.
You do not need to understand everything about dpi (dots per inch) lpi (lines per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch) since our designers know and will help set up your file appropriately. They are are also the experts who know what machine your job will run best on to achieve your desired outcome.
